Your Complete Guide to Princetown, Dartmoor: What to See, Do & Explore

Nestled high on Dartmoor, surrounded by wild moorland and steeped in history, Princetown is one of the most iconic and interesting villages in Devon. Whether you’re here for a walk, an adventure, or just a really good coffee (we’ve got you covered there), this guide is your go-to for everything Princetown Dartmoor has to offer.

From the prison museum to cosy cafés and epic walks, here’s how to make the most of your time in Princetown — the highest settlement on Dartmoor.

A Brief History of Princetown

You’ve probably heard of Princetown Prison, or as it was officially known, HMP Dartmoor. Built in the early 1800s to house prisoners from the Napoleonic Wars and later American POWs, the prison remained in operation for over 200 years.

In early 2025, all prisoners were moved out and the prison is now closed for renovations. It’s expected to reopen in the coming years, but for now, you can still visit the Dartmoor Prison Museum, which is just opposite the prison itself and well worth a look.

Things to Do in Princetown

1. Visit Dartmoor Prison Museum

The Prison Museum offers a fascinating insight into over two centuries of Dartmoor’s most infamous institution. From uniforms to escape attempts, it's a unique stop that’s just a short walk from our shop.

2. Explore the National Park Visitors Centre

Located right in the heart of Princetown, the Dartmoor National Park Visitors Centre has interactive exhibits, walking route ideas, and plenty of inspiration for your Dartmoor day out.

3. Discover the Church and War Graves

Built by prisoners in the 1800s, St Michael and All Angels Church is both historic and peaceful. Its churchyard holds Commonwealth war graves and offers a quiet moment just off the main road.

4. Walk or Ride the Old Railway to Foggintor Quarry

One of the best local routes, this walk follows the disused railway line out of the village, offering moorland views and leading to the dramatic and beautiful Foggintor Quarry. A great spot to explore, swim, or just take it all in.

5. Dartmoor Distillery (Coming Soon)

The building is in place, and while the Dartmoor Whisky Distillery isn’t open just yet, it’s one to keep an eye on for future visits.

6. Sample a Pint of Jail Ale

While Dartmoor Brewery doesn't have a public taproom, you can try their beers — including the legendary Jail Ale — at the Prince of Wales pub, which is right down the street from us and well worth a stop.

7. Afternoon Tea at Two Bridges Hotel

Just a short drive from Princetown, the Two Bridges Hotel sits beside the West Dart River and is the perfect place for a cream tea. From here, you can also take a walk up to the magical Wistman’s Wood.

8. Get Outdoor Gear at Base Camp

Right next door to us, Base Camp Outdoor Store is the place to grab a new waterproof, stock up on walking maps, or get some route advice before heading out.

9. Grab Coffee at dewerstone

That’s us. We're right opposite the Visitors Centre and serve up excellent specialty coffee, teas, and cakes (we don’t bake them ourselves, but they’re genuinely good). While you’re here, check out our ethically made clothing — designed, printed and embroidered right here in Princetown.

  • Prince of Wales – Friendly pub atmosphere with generous portions and a great place to try local beers.

  • The Old Police Station Café – Stop for lunch for a full menu or get fish & chips takeaway!

  • Plume of Feathers – Traditional pub that’s historically popular. Has camping and bunkhouse accommodation too.

  • dewerstone – While we don’t serve full meals, we take coffee seriously. If you’re looking for the best brew in town, we’ve got you.

Where to Park in Princetown

There’s a large public car park next to the Visitors Centre, which is perfect for accessing everything in the village. We also have our own customer parking tucked around the back of our shop — just pop in and ask if you're not sure where to go.

What’s the Weather Like in Princetown?

Princetown weather is famously unpredictable. It’s one of the highest villages in southern England, and that means conditions can change fast — sunshine, mist, and sideways rain all in the same hour.

Check the Princetown webcam and local weather forecast before setting off. But honestly, whether it’s glorious sunshine or full Dartmoor drizzle, there’s something special about this place.

When the weather’s rough, Princetown is still a great destination. Shelter with a coffee, warm up in the pub by the fire, or hunker down with some cake while the wind howls outside. It’s part of the charm.

Explore Beyond Princetown

Princetown makes a great base for bigger adventures. Wild swimming, climbing, tor bagging, mountain biking — Dartmoor has it all. We’ll be sharing more ideas in an upcoming blog all about outdoor activities near Princetown, so keep an eye out.
